Edward Jenner

Edward Jenner expiereimented with the pus of cowpox sores to make a vaccination for smallpox because he noticed the people that workedwith cows weren't getting smallpox. He injected a child with the cowpox. The child recovered from the cowpox. Afterwards he injected the child with smallpox and the kid didn't get it because of the built up immunity from the cowpox.

1.3 Blog

In the first section we learned about sound waves and drew one. in the second section section we did the Rinne test and we used the tuning fork and in the last section we did the debate on the cochlear implants. I was on the against side but really i think it comes down to the persons personal preference.

1.2 Blog

First we learned about the parts and structure of the cell. We also learned about gram positive and gram negative bacteria. This is is determined when they use purple dyes and iodine. Gram postive can retain the dye. We also learned about the 4 different types of antibiotics which are penicillins, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, sulfa antibiotics and we learned how they affect the cell. Then we learned about antibiotic resistance which is when you take antibiotics for to long and the it no longer works on the bacteria.

Mechanisims of Antibiotic resistance

A mutation is a change in the DNA that can sometimes casue a change in the gene product, which is the target of the antimicrobial. If a bacterial cell had a mutation it would change the structure of the bacterias DNA causing the structure to possibly have a resistance to a certain antibiotic according to the structure. Genes are units of heredity.Antibiotic genes might get trasferred between bacteria through injection, reproduction and by eating another bacteria that has the antibiotic resistant gene therefore the trait would be passed. An antibiotic is designed to stop or slow down the growth of bacteria. In Antibiotic resistance a bacteria builds up an immunity and is able to withstand the antibiotic. Another way an antibiotic resistant gene is passed is through conjugation which is mediated by a particular kind of circular DNA called a plasmid which replicates independently of the chromosome. Molecular biology depends on plasmids for cloning and some of the plasmids carry the drug resistant gene. Transformation is the process where genes are transferred from one bacterium to another as "naked DNA"(not surrounded by a cell). Transduction is a bacterial DNA is transferred from one bacterium to another inside a virus that infects bacteria.

I hate public speaking video

I think the point of the video was to let us know that it is scary sometimes to get up in front of a group of people and do a speech because you get up there and your mind goes blank and you forget your speech or your afraid something is wrong with the way you look. I think the message it was trying to get across is don't worry what people think about you if your confident in your speech then you'll do fine. To be confident though you have to know your speech which is where practicing comes in. Something we can learn from it I think is to realize that we aren't the only ones that are nervous when we get up there and to just relax and give it our best shot and who cares if you mess up don't show it and nobody will know.

M.I 1.1final report

The first week of school we learned about different medical interventions. Then we started talking about the Smith family. Sue Smith started college at the beginning of the lesson and she started feeling sick along with some other students. She went to the campus infirmary and they ran an ELISA test and turns out she got menigitidis from another college she went to and gave it to Jill and Jill gave it to Maria and Maria gave it to Marco. Everybody else that was feeling ill had a different disease. Anthony and Arnie had the flu Maggie had strep-throat Wanda had Herpes and Alvin might have Herpes.

My dogs

http://www.big-dog-clothing.com/german-shepherds/german-shepherd-puppy-training-tips/

I'm a major dog person. I always have been ever since I was little. I have three of my own. I have Twister who is a black lab. I adopted him from the animal shelter shortly after he got brought in because I instantly fell in love with him. Then there is Herashio who is a boxer mix. Instead of me finding him he found me. One day I came home and he was laying in the carport. He was extremely skinny. At first my dad wasn't going to let me keep him but finally I talked him into it. And my third one is Blaze. He is a fullblooded German Shepherd. German Shepherds have always been my favorite breed of dogs. I had one when I was little but my neighbors ended up posioning her one night. I got Blaze last Christmas because I got puppy fever and convinced myself I had to have another puppy. My dads instant answer was no but I didn't shut up and I got my beautiful puppy on Christmas. My boyfriend laughs at me for the way I talk to my dogs he says I talk sweeter and nicer to them than I do to him. I can't help it though my dogs mean everything to me.

Friends

A way this picture describes me is because my friends play a major part in my life. There is nothing I love to do more then to hang out with my friends and talk. Sometimes it is about serious stuff and then sometimes it’s just stuff that nobody else would find funny but we will sit there and laugh about forever. My friends have always been there for me no matter what has happened and of course we have had our fights and disagreements but most friends do. We always get over though and eventually we laugh about it and think how immature it was that we actually got mad over it. Also when it feels like everything is over in life no matter what the reason might be my friends are the people I know I can go to to talk about anything.

Meningitis(Medical Intervention Assignment)

Meningitis can physically affect a person because it is an infection in the brain and spinal cord, it can cause vomiting, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, severe headache, and chage in mental status. Meningitis is considered to be a medical emergency and should be treated immediately. If it's not it can cause death. In the brain and spinal cord there is a membrane covering called the meninges. Meningitis relates to this because it is immflamation of the Meninges. If meningitis is suspected the first thing the doctor will do is order a spinal tap to collect fluid and run test. This will show if bacteria is present and any immflamation. Most people will be hospitalized but some are allowed to recover at home if they aren't to sick. Rest, fluids, and over the counter pain medication is usually the treatment for those infected. To prevent the spread of the disease in an affected area people should just be careful and not share any utensils or anything with other people and wash their hands regular.

P.A.W.S Animal Shelter

http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17570219

This is a picture of Ronni. How this picture describes me is because she is one of the dogs at P.A.W.S animal shelter which I have volunteered at since I was about 11. This is one of the things that help me decide what I want to do in the future because seeing the animals down there that don't have homes gets to me all the time. I go down there every Sunday during the school year and then I try to go down there more during the summer. P.A.W.S. is a no kill shelter so some of the dogs have been there for about 7 years. The cat and dog cages are almost constantly filled. The shelter spays or neuters all the animals before they are adopted if they are old enough and get their shots which makes up the adoption fee.

Future in helping animals

This Picture describes what I hope to be in the future which is a Veterinarian. I have always been a major animal person ever since I was little. I have 3 dogs right now, a German Shepherd, a Black Lab, and a Boxer mix. I would have more but of course my parents are standing in the way of that one. After I graduate high school I hope to go to college at VU, USI, or ISU for 2-4 years to become a Vet Tech. just to get my life started and then hopefully go back to become a Vet later.

Antigens and Antibodies(Medical Intervention Assignment)

Antibodies are proteins in the body used to fight off antigens. The antigens stimulate the immune system and it produces antibodies to attack the antigens.Once the immune system has created an antibody for an antigen whose attack it has survived, it continues to produce antibodies for subsequent attacks from that antigen. To fight the infections caused by the antigens the body uses B-lymphocytes.
